Student Athlete Services: Coach
Head Coach, Women's Volleyball - University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley, CA)

Departmental Overview:

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs.  These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).  We are currently seeking a Women’s Volleyball Head Coach.

Description of Position: 

The Head Coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Women’s Volleyball program.  This includes coaching and managing student-athletes, recruiting, fundraising, and developing objectives and strategies for a successful program. 

Responsibilities:

  • Coaches team at practices and competitive events.
  • Assumes responsibility for building a nationally competitive Division I program through successful recruiting and retention of high-level student-athletes.
  • Collaborates with Athletic Trainers, Assistant Coaches, and Strength and Conditioning Coach to design both academic year (in season and out-of-season) and summer conditioning programs.
  • Proposes budgets, reconciles expenses, and proposes purchases for sports program.  Operates program within the approved budget guidelines.
  • In conjunction with various units within the athletic department, participate in donor meetings and events, participate in public relations activities, and monitor both individual and team academic performance to ensure that academic requirements are met.
  • Serve as key liaison to the broader Cal Women’s Volleyball community, engaging in alumni, fund raising and other key stakeholder activities.  

Required Qualifications:  

  • Must have highly advanced and effective inter-personal, motivational, and team leadership skills.
  • Must be able to demonstrate creativity, sound judgment and decision-making, be an effective problem solver, and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must be recognized expert in team sport and coaching principles for student-athletes.
  • Must have supervisory and leadership skills to mentor and develop assistant coaching or program instruction staff.
  • Collegiate level coaching experience, preferably at Division I level.
  • Must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and regulations of the Pacific-12 Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training/experience.
  • Familiarity with rules and regulations of NCAA and Pac-12 Conference.

Student Athlete Services: Athletic Trainer/Physical Therapy/Doctor
Sports Nutritionist - University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley, CA)

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). We are currently seeking a Sports Nutritionist for our Sports Medicine unit.

Position Description:

Responsible for providing nutritional counseling and education services to student­-athletes, working closely with coaches and the food service contractor in planning nutritionally sound meals. Working in collaboration with Staff and Head Athletic Trainer, Strength and Conditioning Staff, Coaches/Staff, and Team Physicians.

Responsibilities:

  • Present lectures, seminars, and workshops on sports nutrition to student-­athletes and coaches, including pre­season nutrition overviews.
  • Provide individual nutritional counseling to student­-athletes.
  • Provide assistance to food service contractor in planning menus for the training table.
  • Provide assistance in planning pre and post-­competition meals, both at home and on the road.
  • Identify athletes with eating disorders and work with physicians and counselors in treatment.
  • Develop nutrition education/intervention and sports nutrition programs.
  • Establish nutritional assessment and treatment policies and procedures.
  • Establish nutritional supplement use policies and procedures, including investigation of potential supplements.
  • Determine budgetary needs for IA nutritional programs.
  • Assist with Drug and Alcohol Education program via supplement education.
  • Develop materials on nutrition and weight control.
  • Supervise use of results from Body Composition Measurement System.
  • Research and analyze scientific and lay reports related to nutrition and athletic performance, including nutritional supplements and diets, translating the findings into sound advice for coaches, medical staff, and student athletes.
  • Maintain knowledge of departmental activities, sports schedules, and procedures.
  • Be liaison for Coaches/Staff with University, University Health Service, Pac 12, Cal IA, and NCAA policies and procedures related to nutrition.
  • Perform duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Appropriate education, training and certification in Nutrition, minimum of Bachelor's Degree.
  • Experience as a Sports Nutritionist in competitive athletic environment, 1 year experience minimum.
  • Ability to meet the extensive time commitments required for a Division I program (after hours coverage, weekend travel for event coverage, etc.).
  • Sensitivity to student-­athlete issues.
  • Proven ability to meet multiple demands in a high ­volume, fast­ paced clinical environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills required for working with a diverse group of patients, clinical staff, managers and visitors.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion, handling sensitive matters involving patients.
  • Computer literacy, including working knowledge of word processing programs.
  • Ability to work with and in a diverse environment.
  • Comfort working in a complex, dynamic, fast paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional education and training (i.e. Master's Degree).
  • Additional experience in sports nutrition and exercise physiology.
  • Knowledge of clinical information/appointment systems.

Student Athlete Services: Media/Video Production
Assistant Director, Video Production (Football) - University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley, CA)

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs.  These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).  We are currently seeking an Assistant Director, Video Production who will work within the department’s Football unit.

Description of Position: This position will be responsible for producing all aspects of production video for the Football department. This includes the handling all aspects of project planning, storyboarding, execution and optimization for all video and motion graphic projects used for the Football program. Must have experience accepting input on a project and feedback on a concept and implementing this information.  Must have experience creating weekly or occasional motivational highlight videos for sports teams. This is a high pressure, Athletic Department environment where deadlines must be met. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinate content plan for all Cal Football video content.
  • Work closely with recruiting staff to develop program ideas and content as needed to aid in the recruitment of student athletes (i.e., manage multimedia and web-based content).
  • Upload/post finished product to the team’s digital properties and social media profiles
  • Export finished product to multi-bit format for delivery to various devices at multiple speeds
  • Develop, capture visual content, edit and produce stories for multiple platforms on deadline for all digital platforms
  • Editing will include integration of graphic elements, sound and music
  • Collaborate with team Multimedia Journalist to deliver impactful pieces of content to help reach the department’s overall annual content goals across all platforms
  • Translate high-level ideas from project owners and convert them to production treatments
  • Assist calbears.com writers and staff in multimedia to complement written articles. 
  • Assist with the organization of the video department facility and keep it stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of all requisite software applications relative to video production and motion graphics and have the ability to put this knowledge into practice in the creation of Football video content.
  • Work in conjunction with the Director of Football Technology with respect to troubleshooting and repairing video equipment and development and management of a yearly budget.

Required Qualifications: 

  • A bachelor's degree and experience in a professional video production setting.  
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a flexible, fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to keep information confidential when appropriate.
  • Experience with XOS Digital Coaches Analysis system.
  • Experience accepting input on a project and feedback on a concept and implementing this information.
  • Experience creating weekly or occasional motivational highlight videos for sports teams.
  • Experience creating end of the year recruiting videos to be shown to potential student-athletes, at awards banquets and other football events.  These videos must be completed using highly creative editing techniques and high impact music to deliver an emotional response that creates great pride in the California brand.
  • Must have shown the ability to be a self-motivator and have a proven track record of working independently to complete assignments early or on-time in a stressful editing environment 
  • Must be flexible to travel with assigned teams as required and work non-traditional hours.
