Communications & Social Media Coordinator - University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley, CA)

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs.  These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).  We are currently seeking a Communications & Social Media Coordinator who will work within the department’s Athletics Communications and Marketing/Fan Experience units.

Job Description: 

The Cal Athletic Department is seeking to fill an Athletic Communications / Marketing & Fan Experience position with a highly motivated and team-oriented individual who will oversee publicity efforts for assigned sports programs and assist with the management of the department’s social media channels.  The person in this role will report to both the Athletics Communication (50%) and Marketing/Fan Experience (50%) units.  Successful candidates must have the ability to produce quality communications content, including press releases, feature stories and annual information guides, for a variety of audiences and platforms (print, web, video) consistent with department and university mission and goals.  Position also involves analyzing identified constituencies/audiences and developing social media strategies, programs, services, and outreach campaigns that will influence public perception, with the ultimate goals of increasing and enhancing fan engagement, improving customer retention rates, promoting awareness of Cal Athletics, and connecting with the campus community and all key stakeholder groups that comprise our social community.

Responsibilities:

Communications 

  • Under minimal supervision, provides analysis and information on intercollegiate athletics results or activities, searches out and writes stories, conducts interviews, sets up press conferences, and arranges for photography, video, or graphics as necessary for news, features and social media content.
  • Handles news requests from reporters for information about the athletic department and the campus.  Builds and maintains good working relationships at all organizational levels and with external media representatives. 
  • Provides general assistance as needed to facilitate requests for information of a general nature and assists with major athletic department press conferences and public announcements.
  • Coordinates design, production and distribution of publications and other promotional materials, including internet or web materials, press releases, social media, brochures, flyers, signage, A/V presentations, etc. 
  • Others as assigned, including professional development


Social Media 

  • Assists in developing, and coordinating marketing and social media efforts for Cal Athletics. Deliver compelling programs that maximize reach, engagement, and impact for the Cal Athletics brand on a local and global scale.
  • Coordinates content and the maintenance of Cal Athletics social media accounts (i.e. community management, promotional sweepstakes, analytics) with the goal of growing and engaging our social media community.
  • Coordinates activities, including events and promotional materials and products, designed to promote awareness of the department and/or campus services, programs or products within the campus community or to the general public. 
  • Researches, analyzes, monitors and evaluates marketing and/or sales efforts for effectiveness, reporting results to appropriate higher levels of administration.
  • Maintains a comprehensive social media editorial calendar in order to proactively produce content appropriate within Cal’s Intercollegiate Athletics infrastructure and coordinate cross-functional efforts with internal units.
  • Assists Athletic Communications and Marketing staff to conduct social media training sessions for coaches, student-athletes and staff, with a focus on best practices.

Required Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Proficiency with appropriate software (Word, Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign and Photoshop preferred) and NCAA-sport software. 
  • Must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the Pac-12 Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards
  • Thorough knowledge of communication principles, media, and marketing techniques
  • Excellent copywriting skills and visual sense; while maintaining the importance of how images and videos define the Cal Athletics brand

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with After Effects editing software
  • May require knowledge of specialty areas, such as broadcast news, including TV/radio, internet and other emerging technologies
  • Strong quantitative analytical ability. Understanding of the use of emerging media related to promoting teams and Intercollegiate Athletics
